Ignore The Pain—Do It Anyway

One of my major goals this year is to improve my physical health. So, I joined a gym and contacted a personal trainer who I knew could help me develop a plan to achieve my goal (BTW: that’s my trainer , Joe Arko, in the blog pic).

Needless to say, the physical impact from the first few workouts has been a bit challenging. Muscle fatigue, stiffness and soreness not to mention the overwhelming desire to take a nap when I get home from a workout…

However, I know from experience that this initial discomfort will eventually disappear as my body gets used to the physical exertion.

It’s no different when you first implement a new concept or strategy into your routine.

Let’s face it…most people become slaves to routine and changes to that routine take time to get accustomed to.

One of the most common reasons people don’t improve is that they don’t work through the initial pain of incorporating that new technique into their daily routine. They attempt to use the new technique once or twice, and because they don’t get immediate results, they revert back to their normal routine. Most people want immediate results without fully earning them.

I can just imagine what would happen if I told my trainer that I wanted to lose fifteen pounds or improve my cardio in three or four workouts. He either laugh or tell me to do another 20 pushups, 15 lunges, 10 pull-ups and 15 windsprints. Knowing Joe, it would be the latter.

Yet, many people in sales expect similar results.

The key is to make small changes and stick with them until you become comfortable with them. This can take a week or two and more difficult changes can take several weeks if not longer.

However, if you want to succeed you must work through the initial discomfort. If your long term goal is worth the reward then you must be willing to also pay the price. Ignore that initial pain and discomfort and do what you need to do to achieve your goals and objectives.
